Death to New Moon

This post is probably not going to score me any points with the female population at BYU.

But I watched New Moon last week and was NOT impressed!

Firstly, this is a LONG movie. After I left the theatre, I was convinced that like 5 hours of my life had passed before my eyes. Every conversation is the exact same. And the exact same length of way too long!

Secondly, for those of you who don't know this series, there is this werewolf, Jacob, who takes off his shirt in the movie. All the time. Approximately every 5.4 seconds. Well every time this happened (remember this was a lot!) every female in the theatre under the age of probably 70 giggled like a love sick teenager. It got a little old. (The giggling, not the chest :)

Finally, at the end of the movie Bella still goes with Edward. I knew this happened, as I've read the books. But Edward is such a tool (this is where 98% of girls at BYU start to send me death threats). His big part in the movie is to leave Bella, try to kill himself, she saves him, and then she has to save him again at another part in the film. Yay Edward. Why are we obsessed? Plus there was a part in the movie when Edward took his shirt off. The only thing I could think of was "cold dead fish". What is Bella thinking?

I think I am probably so anti-Twilight because I was a Buffy/Angel fan before.

Which I know is lame in it's own right. I'm fully aware. But here is the general premise: Buffy is a human who falls in love with vampire with a soul, Angel who has committed to never kill a human again. Their love is doomed and they don't know if they can ever live together. They even have a werewolf for a friend. Sound familiar???? Except for that Angel is not said whiny tool like Edward.

And bring on the death threats....!

  1. This is not a death threat. :)I am going to agree with you, although I haven't seen New Moon or read the books. I did see Twilight and I just kept thinking, "This is so bad!" All of the furtive glances from across the room and sparkling in the sunlight did not win points in my book. (I was also a Buffy fan, but it was in secret because my mom didn't approve...)

  2. I have two words for you Dr. Coyne:

    THANK YOU

I've been so anti-twilight forever and everyone practically burns me at the stake when they find out so I've not been so vocal about it lately. But I am so glad you posted this so I can just let you know how much I agree. Edward is a controlling, stalker, pouty man and I cannot stand him in the movie or the book. I read the book twilight and refused to read anymore because it drove me insane how much all the little beehives in my ward thought that Edward was the perfect example of the perfect boyfriend. I don't think so! Pretty sure I would call the police if any one of my friends dated anyone remotely like him. gahhhhhhh

so basically I'm just trying to say...Amen

  3. Amen!!!!!!! I admit I like the story and all but could someone please grow a pair? Just wait for the last two movies where everyone is so self sacrificing. Edward is an emo pansy

  4. I totally agree. The reason why I'm so frustrated with Twilight is the fact that it is so emotionally addicting, but has absolutely zero plot value. Even as I'm reading it I'm going, this is so romantic, but so stupid, why I am reading this. Also, I think Stephanie Meyers is a creep. I watched an interview with her over Thanksgiving and she said she got this idea from a dream she had about a couple lying in a meadow together. Why is she writing books and making millions off her sensual dream fantasies?!

  5. AMEN!! Thanks Dr. Coyne! P.S. if you were wondering, I never got past the first book, (the report was enough Twilight for me ;) ).
Frankly, I never quite understood what either of them saw in each other, (granted I am probably just a bitter single cynic), but by the end of the novel, I thought he was a creepy stalker, (and yes, the definition of a tool).
Thanks for your honesty, and for not giving in like so many other gals here.

  6. So apparently I am the only one who is going to disagree...I love all things Twilight-not that I can't see some of your points but I am a true fan and love it! I will agree that the girls screaming/giggling did get a little old. I am glad that you mentioned Buffy again-you have mentioned it before in class too and I have never have seen the show. I think it's time to Netflix them during my break before I have to come back to reality again for one more semester :)

  7. I love Twilight. . . and New Moon. And Eclipse, not so much Breaking Dawn but I still read it twice. I just take it for what it is, not quality literature, but an easy, pleasure read. I cannot stand Bella or Edward or their relationship, but they are meant for eachother, they are both so annoying! Team Jacob!!!! As for the New Moon movie, I saw it twice because I am a REALLY big fan of books I have read being made into movies- I love seeing the characters and story come to life! Jacob's abs were probably 1/2 the reason I saw it the second time :) I can't deny it.

  8. Ah, you posted this on your media blog. I will take this oppurtunity to post the same comment I made on your other one...in the hopes that more people will see the error of thier ways

The whole series stinks!!! Everything about it is just one big spewing mess full of teenage angst-bile. I almost (….only almost) understand tweeny girls around the ages of 12-15 falling in love with the lame characters, but that’s only because they can’t help it. Their bodies are made that way. If you are over that age though, there’s no excuse! Let’s face it, there’s something wrong with a series if you’re in a singles ward relief society and you hear someone bear their testimony on how she truly believes that one day we will all find our ‘Edward’. Also, if you have a themed twilight room in your house there may be something wrong with the way you function. What are people thinking? I’m not sure why this series has caused everyone to loose their minds, but I’m glad that you at least have found yours again.
